My Selection

As an educator, I'm always interested in finding out about others who value education and why they are passionate. We all have a story about why we are investing in students.

I'm also incredibly curious to learn about Malala; for someone to risk their life, take a bullet, for something, they must have an unswerving devotion to that idea. I'm moved and encouraged by people like that, individuals who will invest passionately in a people or a cause because of their love for it/them and the value they place on it.

I haven't even cracked the book open and I'm already so excited to read about this young, world-changing woman.

Perhaps they were just the (unnecessary?) spark that caused the fire to finally be lit--if we look ...

Growth

Malala includes two of Lincoln's quotes (p 78-9), which I find to be wonderfully profound and useful: "It is far more honorable to fail than to cheat." "Teach him how to gracefully lose." And I'll add this third: Life is full of challenges, some minor, some catastrophic. Growth often happens as the result of pain. But if we are not careful, pain leads to bitterness, which can often lead to disrespect and hate. Here's to Malala, for allowing her pain to lead her to growth, and may we all learn to do the same.
